Flight Of The Hawk
By Red Hawk
see relatedWhy?
Yesterday afternoon, my friend and I were sitting in my backyard. We heard what sounded like a very loud explosion/shot of some type. It sounded like it came from next door. She yelled out and we heard nothing else.
This afternoon as I was leaving my home, a man in his car was stopped in the middle of the street looking at my house and the house next to mine. I smiled and asked if I could help him. He said that a hawk was shot yesterday afternoon, and the guy who saw it fall said the shot was fired from our direction. I walked to his vehicle and told him what we had heard. The game warden was parked in front of the neighbors house. The man I was talking to was upset and concerned about the hawk being killed and asked if I knew about a possible nest and baby birds. I pointed to the trees in front of my house. They have been up in our trees for as long as I've been here. This is their territory. This is their home. Why? Why? Why?
I spoke to the game warden, telling her about the shot we heard yesterday and the time we heard it. I hope it helps. She said the neighbors are denying any knowledge of it. I told her that didn't surprise me a bit. She said that she was opening an investigation and I gave her my number and a written statement about what I heard. I can't tell you how sorry I am that one of these magnificent birds has been killed. Our trees have been part of their territory for the 13 years we've been here. They have blessed us with their call, their flight, and their connection to the wonder of nature. Now there is one less.
Why? Why? Why?

oh my goodness... this is terrible. :(
Dang! That's mean :(
can't eat hawk meat or eagle. hawk feather aren't particularly valueable, but while eagle feathers are, um, NOT THAT valuable....point, there is no economic reason to shot such a bird for money.
pestulential factor.... hawks and eagles whack rodents...gee! there's a bad thing. or, absolutely no point in shooting a helpful creature.
attacking humans. nope not a regular occurance so unlikely a factor.
point0 no definable excuse save trophyism or just stupid marksmanship exercise- end result world poorer for said, public floggings aren't allowed any longer- pity.
Damn stupid.
@Botolf - @thekeyhole - @NVPhotography - @Uncious - How could someone be so stupid? I don't know who did this, but I sure hope they don't get away with it.
How terrable that someone would shoot such a beautiful bird. I hope the game warden can prove who did it and prosecute them.
That's really sick. Most sane people like hawks and there is no reason to kill them. Hope you info pans out and they get a big fine. Now you really know what kind of people they are.
Don't even say it, are these the rooster people???? This is a sin . . . hawks mate for life . . . there is a very sad spouse somewhere.
so very sorry but historically one cannot shoot "the messenger" without some bad mojo coming their way some people are so ...
People do some thought less things, sometimes. I am sorry to hear this.
@jacksoncroons - I didn't know this - swans, yes, but hawks - that is amazing, and in this case very sad...s
we are in the country and there might be a reason
on the flip side some good news )))

what a shame-like to see them on full flight or when they are circling around the neighborhood.
I feel you. My next door neighbors are always shooting - I'm never sure at what, but it makes me very nervous. Peace
I'll never understand why people do things like that. It breaks my heart that they would kill such a beautiful bird. For what? For fun?
I hope they catch them.
Here in Michigan sturgeon are a protected fish. (not sure if they are in other states) A couple of weeks ago some fisherman saw a guy pull one in and, despite their protests, take it away. Several people took photos on their phones so the picture and story ended up on the front page of the newspaper. The DNR was all over it, offering a reward to find the man, and he eventually turned himself in. The only statement he made was that he wanted it. He just wanted it. aaack!
The only things I kill are mosquitoes and cockroaches. Other than that, I don't kill anything. So reading about people who kill birds like THAT just makes me annoyed and upset. What on earth?!
Oh, my...how sad that makes me!
@stixandstonz - I do too Stix.
@High_Ceilings - Big
ness.
@dikdoktor - I already knew. If it was one of the people next door, well...I don't think they think at all.
@jacksoncroons - Rooster people. That's were the shot sounded like it came from. Who ever did this has wiped out the future generations of hawks that lived right here in our neighborhood. (shakes head in sadness)
@mag_1 - Yes Beck. What they do will come back to them. Doesn't bring back the magnificent hawk that blessed my trees and the sky, but yes I understand what your saying.
@BianchiStreet - No thought at all is a concern. People like this shouldn't have their hands on any sort of gun.
@Jillycarmel - We are a little town on the coast. Lot's of nature still here, but no one less beautiful bird and it's future generations.
@barberleong - A huge shame indeed.
@shellisland - Oooo. That would concern me too.
@WakeUpLaughing - I got to see a amazingly huge sturgeon in Troutville, Oregon a few years back. What a strange fellow to "just want it" and have no respect for the law that protects them. What an adult BRAT!
@bella_esperanza - I just don't get it either. I take spiders out of the house and put them in the yard. They eat the little bugs that bug me even more. They are part of the balance. So was the hawk.
@nellinidaho - Me too Nell. Triple

.
@Jaynebug - @BianchiStreet - 'tis true. I used to commute up to Portland, Maine for a short time, and there was a beautiful pair of hawks that I would see every morning circling over the highway together. One morning, I saw one of them dead in the road - a highway accident. The mate swooped and dove for weeks over that stretch of highway, just looking . . . It was really, really sad.
@mag_1 - Thank for the link on Lynx. That is good news. Lynx is one of my totem animals too.
