DSRV
That means Deep Sea Rescue Vehicle. Have you seen one of them? I had not. Morro Bay, California is a bird sanctuary. One of the largest in the USA. The first picture has Morro Rock, where over 400 species of bird have been spotted. That was what I was taking the picture of when I saw the strange vehicle in front. What the hecktor is that?
Then I got closer.
I wanted to get closer, but my camera battery died just as I took this shot, and the screen went blank. I was thrilled when I charged it up and found that the picture showed up.
Remember Hunt for Red October? Loved that movie. This was the type of vehicle that they came down in to save the guys left on Red October. We called it our sleepy nautical movie, because the underwater sounds and maybe the pinging of the sonar would put The King and I to sleep if we'd put it on at night. Try as we would to get all the way through it after the first time, we'd laugh when we woke up to the credits rolling.

Was there a rescue off the coast recently, or is it just travelling through Morro Bay?

I've never seen anything like that before. I will show the picture of Morro Bay to my husband when he gets home. He spent some time there when he went to Cal Poly, SLO.
Want to bet that someone could find a picture of the Deep sea rescue vehicle used in the movie? I will take a look.
DSRV-2 is now decommissioned. It was planned to go to the underseas museum but I don't know why it is in Morro Bay: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSRV-2_Avalon
I couldn't find any reference to Red October and the use of this vehicle.
Ohmigosh! Morro Bay was the site of one of my worst drunks as a young man! It all started at a country-western bar where a nice looking girl was shooting pool blouseless - that is she just wore a bra, jeans, and cowboy boots....

Cool vehicle! Maybe it will be the new Oscar Mayer weiner car. A little paint, a few wheels, it's possible.

@PPhilip - In fiction, it was used in the 1978 film Gray Lady Down as a rescue vehicle following a submarine accident, as well as Tom Clancy's novel The Hunt for Red October and film based on itThe Hunt for Red October to ferry men from the USS Dallas to the Red October.

Wow! I can only imagine that seeing this in front of you was as ethereal as my first time stepping foot aboard a navy vessel (FFG-52 USS Carr). I know that there was a few seconds where I wondered if I was really seeing it or if I were dreaming. As far as the bird sanctuary goes, I think that is also fascinating. My father had an african grey while I was growing up and ever since I have had a fascination with colorful birds, more specifically parrots in the Macaw family :). Thanks for sharing this with the internet.
I really like morro bay and have been there many times, though I have not been there in quite awhile so I should plan a trip.
We stopped over at Morrow Bay on our 'Route 66 holiday' several years ago. The bobbing boats, sunset and mist shrouded volcanic plug in the bay made for a wonderful sight.
@WorldWideWatchman - My pleasure. It was amazing, but then we're lucky to have a Maritime Museum that sponsors many such display. Lets you get up close and personal with history and even some film ship/vessels. The birds are amazing in our area as our temps and bird enviroments are lovely for their needs. My kids and husband had a "Big Summer" after watching the movie The Big Year about birding. The found about 100 birds in our local area and it was great to hear their excitment and stories about finding/seeing the birds plus they were out in nature taking in a bigger picture away from a screen. @rojobe - It's where I stayed back in the early 70's and declared to my parents that this was the area I would be moving to in the future. I'll never forget the smile they exchanged.
I moved here in 1977. I'll never forget the look on their faces when I told them.

morro bay is my most favorite place on the california coast i do so miss my trips there but the rock looks just as beautiful as always. nice looking dsrv
